The History Behind the Short John Delivery Bike

The “Short John” delivery bike has a fascinating history, and its development reflects both practical needs and cultural changes over time. Here are some key points:

Delivery bikes, including the “Short John,” were initially designed to transport goods in urban areas. They were popular with merchants and messengers who needed an efficient way to navigate busy streets. The “Short John” delivery bike is characterized by its short, robust frame and a platform or cargo space in the front, making it easy to transport goods.

These bikes were particularly prevalent in the first half of the 20th century, serving as a vital means of transportation before the widespread use of cars and vans. They were used for everything from delivering bread and milk to transporting mail and other goods.

Although their original use has diminished, delivery bikes have experienced a resurgence in recent years. They have become popular as an environmentally friendly mode of transport, especially in urban areas where congestion and parking can be problematic. Additionally, they have become popular among families who use them to transport children and groceries.

There is some uncertainty around the name, but there is broad agreement that these bicycles have many names. For example “fish bicycles” and “truck bicycles” as well as “transporters”. “Short John” probably refers to the short construction of the bicycle.

The “Short John” delivery bike is thus an example of how a practical bicycle can adapt and survive through generations, even as its primary use changes.

The Joy of Cycling

If you spend a lot of time on your bike, comfort is of course essential!

The 100% upright riding position means no strain on your lower back or shoulders – it’s as comfortable as sitting in a chair! The powerful (50 Nm) Velorbis center motor gives you extra speed or a little help when going uphill or against the wind. A sprung Velorbis saddle in genuine leather in two colors will gradually mold to your body, providing the perfect seat. Alternatively, a brown gel saddle has a natural softness that provides a fantastic ride. Top-quality Schwalbe tires are 55mm wide and provide extra suspension over bumps and potholes. They are available in cream or black. The lightweight, welded steel frame, fork, mudguards, chain guards, and wheel rims can be colored to your liking in over 200 shades. Unlike most traditional bikes, we make our frames from strong yet lightweight Chromoly steel, meaning the bike weighs only 18kg (without extras), making it much easier to maneuver.

Great Functionality

It may be hip and cool, but it has to function well! Here are some of our best features:

Shimano Nexus gears are internal and, therefore, low-maintenance, protected from the elements, and available in 1, 3, and 7 speeds. The 7-speed bikes have the option of either coaster brakes or hand brakes. Depending on what you need to carry, luggage options include a steel luggage carrier with bag hooks, an exclusive wooden front crate, a wooden box (low or high), or a D-shaped basket, so everything can be easily transported. A chain guard and leather mud flap mean you arrive at your destination free of splashes, oil, or road grime. The tires use anti-puncture technology. High-quality components mean a long and low-maintenance lifespan for your bike.

Safety First!

Cycling in the city can have its challenges, so we do our best to put your mind at ease:

The upright riding position gives you a good view of your surroundings and other traffic on the road. A 100db bell is included. The bike comes with a Velorbis integrated frame lock with a key.
